. our chief international correspondent christiane amanpour joins us from rome. this report was in "the observer," the newspaper, saying one man was a 20-year-old seminarien, cardinal was a spiritual director and inappropriate approaches were made after night prayers. what do you know about the case and what cardinal o'brien is saying? >> reporter: well, look, we know according to published reports there's this case and three other cases. a total of four cases now coming out and accusing cardinal o'brien of inappropriate sexual misconduct. he himself is said to have taken up, obviously, legal counsel. he has, as we've said, resigned but he was resigning months ago. it's just that today pope benedict accepted that resignation. he didn't have to accept it today. it could have been further delayed but he did accept the resignation. and now we've also know, because of statements cardinal o'brien has posted, he will not come here to rome and take part in the election of the next pope in the conclave. he said that he would want the spotlight not to be on him but on the pope. but what is clear

assessment of what went wrong and what exactly happened. >> i know you're trying to get us the actual details here. what do we know about his girlfriend, reeva steenk. mp? . >> reporter: i was just on her twitter page and it's quite sad to read the twitter page of somebody who died just a few hours ago. on it she describes herself as a model, a law graduate and a child of god. what we do see through her twitter feed is that it appears she went to a promotional party last night for a car launch and a lot of people were excited. there's a picture of her up there. she's a very beautiful blond woman and she was also just recently in the celebrity pages of one of the sunday newspapers. the couple were a bit of a celebrity couple here in south africa. we do know that. in terms of what happened, what transpired, it's tragic either way. one family has lost a sister, a daughter, of course, oscar pistorius, the big question now is the implications for his career. he was supposed to race in march. it's highly unlikely he'll be taking to the track by then. >> do we know if steenkamp and pistorius lived t

have a reporter in pretoria. good morning to you. what can you tell us? >> hello. rohit, can you hear me? apparently he is having trouble hearing us. he was taken into custody and in court and taken for medical examination. according to the police in pretoria, we learned there had perhaps other incidents of violence at that home and called for domestic violence. i want to bring in our nbc sports analyst. first of all, your initial reaction to this? >> utter and absolute shock. anybody who's ever met oscar pistorius just simply cannot wrap their heads around what this could possibly be. >> this sounds very dramatic, a charge of murder. it is possible this could have been an accidental shooting. what do you know about the relationship between these two? >> i don't know much about the relationship. one of the reports we're getting out of south africa now is they have gone to his house on multiple occasions for sort of arguments between these two, so i think that that sort of points in a different direction. >> you talk about the kind of guy oscar pistorius is. we had the chance to talk t
